Inclusive Reading Club: I'm Not Your Superwoman: Healing Black Women's Pain

Inclusive Reading Club: I'm Not Your Superwoman: Healing Black Women's Pain Online

One woman in four is likely to suffer from depression at some time during her life (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2012). Yet, the associated mental health stigmas, lack of insurance, and distrust of the health care system make it more difficult for Black women to seek help. The data show that only one-in-three African Americans who need mental health care receives it. For many Black women, facing the stressors of racism and sexism, in a culture that values strong and independent women, the price is costly to their mental health. These are their stories and love lessons for the next generation.

Join us in reading excerpts from Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting by Terrie M. Williams and Black Women’s Mental Health: Balancing Strength and Vulnerability, edited by Stephanie Y. Evans, Kanika Bell, and Nsenga K. Burton.

Get started with the readings here (available through library.salve.edu > Course Reserves > Inclusive Reading Club) and a place to share your thoughts on the IRC's online bulletin board https://padlet.com/salvelibrarian/irc
