Inclusive Reading Club: Black dignity in a world made for whiteness

Inclusive Reading Club: Black dignity in a world made for whiteness Online

Join us for a very special moderated discussion with Shania Riviere, Class of 2023, Administration of Justice major, and Sista Circle representative, and Meghan DeCarvalho, Director of Counseling Services. We'll be reading excerpts from the book I'm still here: Black dignity in a world made for whiteness by Austin Channing Brown. Brown’s memoir walks through her life as a Black woman in predominantly white spaces including her educational experiences and encounters in the Christian faith. Brown shares vulnerably and encourages readers, particularly in her discussion guide (which will be used for the book club meeting) to self-reflect on their own identities, how to cope with microaggressions and blatant racism for people of color, and how white people can identify and limit their fragility. She hope that her book stirs people to action, and helps them to decide that “doing nothing is no longer an option.” The readings, chapters 1-4, are posted on the library’s website under Course Reserves. Post your thoughts from the readings and find much more information about the IRC on the padlet (online bulletin board).
