Inclusive Reading Club: This Chair Rocks: A Conversation About Ageism (hybrid) Online
Our youth-obsessed culture saturates us with messages of shame about growing older and the natural process of aging. Color the gray hair, hide those bald spots and wrinkles, and step aside for the younger generation. How do these ageist stereotypes divide and debase our society?
Join us in examining these societal views on aging with Dr. Anna Matos-Mournighan, deputy director of the Edward King House Senior Center in Newport and co-lead for Newport For All Ages. We’ll explore the research behind damaging ageist stereotypes and talk about the benefits of adopting more age-friendly attitudes with guidance from excerpts of the book This Chair Rocks by Ashton Applewhite.
Get started with the readings on the IRC's message board.
This will be a hybrid program. You may join us in-person on the second floor of the library or via Zoom. All registrants will receive a Zoom link.
The IRC is managed collaboratively by the Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention and McKillop Library. Rose Albert (she, her, hers) is Associate Director of the Office of Multicultural Programs and Retention, rose.albert@salve.edu. Gretchen Sotomayor (she, her, hers) is Special Programs and Instruction Librarian at McKillop Library, gretchen.sotomayor@salve.edu.
